Resource room model with specialized tutorial support from
Regular and Special Education Teachers
Certified Mental Health Counselors
Speech Therapists
Licensed Social Workers
Certified School Psychologists
Instituted in 1993, Concordia Connection serves high school graduates who had an IEP or 504 at the high school level, as well as students identified with an appropriate diagnosis at the college level. Diagnoses can include attention deficit disorder, Asperger syndrome, learning disabilities, and anxiety disorders. Concordia Connection is a mainstream program: students are fully integrated into all of Concordia’s courses, programs, degree requirements, co-curricular activities, and athletic activities.
Built on the Resource Room model familiar at the high school level, the program delivers individualized academic, social and emotional supports throughout the college journey. The goal of Concordia Connection is to help students become confident, self-reliant learners, able to advocate for themselves while in college and later in their careers.
The program's leader is a teacher, certified school psychologist, and licensed psychologist. Staff include regular and special education teachers, certified mental health counselors, speech therapists, licensed social workers and certified school psychologists.
Each semester in addition to their regular classes, Connection students are registered for a one-credit independent study which incorporates the development of individualized learning strategies and additional study sessions. Connection staff serve as academic advisors and coordinate an array of support services and testing modifications. Specialized tutorial support is available on an unlimited basis within regular daytime and evening hours. Progress is routinely monitored with Concordia's faculty.
The Concordia Connection program is for high school graduates eligible for admission to Concordia College. In addition to being admitted to the College, students will be asked to provide:
- Certified diagnosis of learning disability, which minimally includes a WAIS-R (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) profile with subtest scores taken within the past year, and the most recent IEP
- Recommendation from a learning specialist who has worked closely with the applicant
- Guidance counselor’s recommendation
- Personal interview with the program director
